About Me

Hello! I’m a development geographer and I draw on postcolonial discourse to examine the everyday geographies of disasters. I’m interested in the ‘mundane’ aspects of life in disaster contexts, but recognize that the everyday can be spectacular and may challenge the status quo, reflecting the feminist slogan that the “personal is political”. My work is human-centred and premised on the idea that understanding the everyday is critical if we are to sustainably reduce disaster risk. My work has principally focused in South America and the Caribbean, but recently expanded to the UK and the Pacific.

I’m a lecturer at The University of Manchester. I’m a founding editor of the Journal of Humanitarian Affairs, and an Editorial board member of the Journal of Disaster Studies.
